May Newsletter - Literacy Volunteers Needed!

from the desk of Nelson C Barry III, Founder & President of UASF:

Spring is here, flowers have bloomed and summer is just around the corner. Soon summer will give way to fall and winter and another year will be behind us. It all happens in the blink of an eye.

Right now, Urban Angels SF’s dedicated team is helping San Francisco students in grades 2 to 6 who are failing in schoool. And we need your help. Below are several ways that you can become a valued member of our community and have a big impact on these children's futures! -

MAY 2025 NEWS FROM UASF

📚Lending Library

We have started Book Lending & Literacy Support Program for shelters where hundreds of under-served students live. Sign Up to volunteer.

In middle-income neighborhoods, the ratio of books to child is 13 to 1. In low-income neighborhoods, the ratio is 1 age-appropriate book for every 300 children. Meaning, children from low-income families do not have any books. Providing books and interesting reading material (including comic books) for these children will instill a love of reading. Accompanied by story time and other proven ways to inspire children to read, Urban Angels SF is giving these young students a chance at a legitimate education and a chance at a decent future.

🎓 Tutoring

Another excellent way to support the education of these children is to become a tutor. It is just two hours a week, online and with training included so you have the skills to be successful. Learn more by signing up.

🎒 Backpacks & School Supplies

This summer UASF will launch its 7th Annual Backpacks Of Love campaign. Want to volunteer? Sign Up.

💛 Donating

Donations that benefit the education of local children are always appreciated.

With SFUSD suffering multi-million dollar budget cuts, and over 50% of these students below grade level reading proficiency,  this is the time to make an impact. Will you help these children succeed? Donate today.
