Every child deserves to begin the school year with confidence, dignity, and the tools they need to succeed.
Yet for many children in San Francisco, the first day of school begins with an unfair disadvantage. Families struggling with poverty often face impossible choices between paying for housing, food, transportation, or purchasing a backpack and the basic school supplies their children need to learn.
That’s where Backpacks of Love makes a difference.
Created by Urban Angels SF in 2019, Backpacks of Love is our annual community-wide campaign dedicated to ensuring that elementary school children from low-income families begin the school year equipped, encouraged, and ready to thrive.
What began by serving 130 children has grown into one of Urban Angels SF’s signature programs, with a goal of providing 1,000 children each year with brand-new, high-quality backpacks filled with essential school supplies.
But every backpack delivers something far more valuable than notebooks, pencils, crayons, and folders.
It delivers confidence.
It delivers dignity.
It delivers hope.
It tells a child:
You matter.
Your dreams matter.
Your community believes in you.
Urban Angels SF’s annual Backpacks of Love is a chance to give children living in SF’s homeless shelters the security and confidence they need to succeed for a WHOLE SCHOOL YEAR!
